Of course, everybody knows a bit of English. And, you can get by virtually anywhere, even on a remote island you could find somebody who knows a few words. But when arriving in Russia, even the alphabet is different. You could be literally dying for a cold coke and be standing outside of the corner store and don’t know it!
This Russian word: simply means products and is the name of such a shop.
As you gain your knowledge of Russian, so the world in which you are living, opens up and becomes more exiting. Of course Vladimir has shopping malls, modern supermarkets, McDonalds and most restaurants have an English menu and a waitress who knows a few words. I remember the first time I wanted to rent a flat on my own or find a pencil sharpener! Ok, so it’s not so scary, you have a great support group on hand day or night. All English speaking. But as you start to get an understanding of the main phrases and the alphabet you will see just how great Russia can be. You will find that the beautiful looking word hanging on the wall actually means something not so beautiful after all. You will make trips to Moscow with your friends, read the signs in the metro, feel at home. I guarantee that for most of you, by the time finally arrives to go home, you won’t want too.
